In the mean time, by getting involved in the AI, it made it possible for me to connect with lots of people from around the world that share this vision and methodology. By attending conferences in Kathmandu (Nepal), Gent (Belgium), Chennai (India) and meeting on other occasions I managed to built professional and friendship connectons. This video link gives a great introduction on AI. It is an interview that Dr. Lindsey Godwin gives on the subject.

Generative communication
Would it not be great if you can help to turn the thousands of short an long conversations within your organisation, family, community into dialogues that shape the future in a positive, generative way? Would it not be great if you can facilitate people in their own growth by helping them to tune in on their own strengths, talents, aspirations?
Generative communication is just about that!
One aspect/ condition required to facilitate generative communication and - dialogues is authenticity in the listening and in the talking.
Very recently I picked up a nice description of authentic presence in a conversation, in a dialogue:
"Not looking for the others weakness to make you feel stronger; not seeking confirmation of your own weaknesses by having the conversation. "

On Wednesday 6 march 2013 I have had the honour to be the guest lecturer at the New York University Coaching skills programme. During this session we interacted with the students on the subject of psychological levels and the feasability of changing at the appropriate levels - such as mission awareness, roles, beliefs and norms and values, skills, behaviour. The high quality of both questioning eachother and the results from the interactive discussion with the students gave me a great feeling as lecturer, coach and human being. Thanks to Prof Susanne Mueller who invited me to be guest lecturer during my visit to New York.

Question from an Appreciative Inquiry practitioner:
"I
have been asked by an organization to help them defining their corporate values
and then define their observable leadership behaviour. I have proposed them to
organize one day event with a group of people. Did you do such an event ? What has been the
question you asked them to come to their values?"
My suggestion/ answer:
"Rather than "the question" we need to look at the
"process of questioning" towards defining the corporate values. One
can have participants to explore succesfull situations of dillema, succesfull
situations of decisions in times of conflicting issues and have these explored
in an appreciative dialogue.
At different group interventions I did facilitate on the topic
of values. Not by always using a "standard default intellectualising
question" but rather by exploring practices and asking about which values
were at stake.
At one occasion I even used photography as a means to surface
their values.
In small groups - each equipped with a little digital camera - I
assigned the participants to make a picture representing a very important value
for their organisation. During the course of the 3-day workshop they were given
ample time to debate about it, take pictures and decide on which one picture
best represented the value. Each group handed in their best picture which were
plenary presented. A winner was elected to have a "cherish on their
cake" but the process was the most important of course."
I am happy to assist organisations around the world on their
avenue towards Human excellence – be it in profit or not-for-profit
organisations. Should you wish to
discuss an assignment, you can email me on jsomers@scarlet.be
